ADDED on SEPT 18, 2015: Ms. Fiorina and Mr. McAfee, I have sent you this Open Letter because I think that you may have an answer for the question posed below (in the gray box). Donald Trump cannot answer this question but I know you have the competence required to take it on and it is a pressing matter that continues to make itself known.
Hello Mr. Trump,
It has come to my attention that you are running, again, for the presidency of the United States, the greatest country on Earth because it says so.
My name is Marie-Lynn Richard. I am Canadian. I am the adopted daughter of a physicist and a Catholic nun. In the 60s and early 70s, my father worked tirelessly in his Valcartier lab advancing some of the most widely used war technologies in the U.S. like The Ferret listening devices, remotely guided missiles and laser-based technologies. Yes, it is true, we Canadians are responsible for a lot of the technology the United States takes for granted. We even built your least favorite website Healthcare.gov. Canadian workers are very popular in the U.S. because we are perceived as smart, nice and polite. And this is why, as a basement dwelling programmer in Montreal, I get to work for U.S.-based companies and individuals a lot. I have been doing this for over 20 years.
“I have so many websites … I hire people. They do a website. It costs me three dollars.” – Donald Trump
In my field, developing websites, the saying “You get what you pay for” is especially true. A man should never pay $3 for a domain name let alone for a website. While your campaign website looks like it cost five dollars, most of your other websites look like they cost tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars. The people you hire should be proud of themselves. They deserve a pat on the back, not a national public declaration that their work is worth $3 to you. I have witnessed you denigrate the people you do business with, telling the whole world that anyone who does business with you gets screwed over (Nobody sees that as a sign of leadership, or ‘winning!’ by the way, it’s more of a display of adult toddlerism.) I hope the people who are building websites for all your luxury brands and properties are getting paid a king’s ransom, after all they deserve it. But more so, it is normal that a man who spends a considerable amount of time insulting people who live in other countries should have adequate and competent I.T. security.
In the next few years, it will become incredibly difficult for anyone to build and deploy a safe and sturdy website on the internet. For one, U.S. technical resources are becoming scarce. The best and the brightest of your tech worker force are joining the cyber security fight. I am working day and night securing U.S. website for American entrepreneurs. It is great work, it is fascinating work, it pays the bills and I get to chit chat about U.S. current events and politics (a topic I have obsessed over since I got my first subscription to TIME magazine when I was 12) with absolutely fantastic U.S. small business owners.
You see, as the U.S. spent trillions on its military industrial complex, it is becoming obvious that they left the door open to the whole world when it comes to internet connected systems and cloud services. Forget false issues like immigration or voter fraud, the incredible intrusions into some of the most important databases of information about Americans should give you pause. For instance, it is mind-boggling that hackers have easily taken hold of the personal information of millions of U.S. government employees, of thousands of U.S.-based Sony employees and millions of U.S. kinksters. In fact, the case of the Adult Friend Finder breach from a few weeks ago, is directly related to retaliation from a technical team over unpaid work.
Growing up, I watched Miss Universe religiously. It even inspired me, as a young girl, to pursue a career as a translator. My favorite part of the competition was the Q & A. So let’s pretend you are a Miss Universe contestant and I am a judge. I will ask you a question and judge you based on your answer.
Top researchers in I.T. security are predicting a shortfall of 1 million workers in the next few years in order to secure the government, educational and business I.T. infrastructure in the United States. What would you do, as POTUS, to address the urgent requirement for workers who have a degree in Computer Science, keen intellect and curiosity as well as an interest in keeping the United States I.T. infrastructure safe from foreign hackers who have immense talent, all the time in the world, and little to no good job prospect where they are?
If you make it far enough into the process, you will be running against the most qualified candidate for POTUS, the U.S. has ever had. Does it make a difference WHO runs the U.S.? Well, yes and no. The greatest power of the President of the United States is in how he (or she) influences people’s perception of the U.S. abroad. I will leave you with a quote from a Grande Dame of American politics, a woman who has had a unique view into both the public and the secret life of the recent presidential history of the United States.
“Never lose sight of the fact that the most important yardstick of your success will be how you treat other people – your family, friends, and coworkers, and even strangers you meet along the way.” – Barbara Bush
That is all.
